Six new staff members in DKE working group
The Data and Knowledge Engineering Group (DKE) around Prof. Andreas Nürnberger welcomes three new colleagues working on third-party funded positions. They will be part of the projects "Docear" and "SciPlore". Both projects are company formations in development, that are founded for one year within the program "EXIST - Existenzgründungen aus der Wissenschaft" by the BMWi.
The "Docear" project aims to implement a software for literature management, comparable to already existing systems like Endnote and Citavi. In contrast to those solutions that focus on mere reference management, "Docear" will support the entire literature management process, thus also the search and recommendation of literature, the management of documents and the corresponding references, and the composition of new literature. The project will be led by Jöran Beel, former employee of the VLBA Labs. Furthermore, the team consists of Stefan Langer and Marcel Genzmehr, alumni of the computer science department.
The objective of "SciPlore" is the further development and commerzialization of methods for the computation of document similarity, originally designed by Béla Gipp, Norman Meuschke (FIN) and Mario Lipinsky (TU BS). Those are based on novel approaches for citation resemblance and permit an improved identification of content similarity in scientific documents. This allows enhanced scientific recommendation services, but also the detection of plagiarism, even if the original text was translated or paraphrased. The latter was proved for instance by an examination of the plagiarized doctoral thesis of Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg.
