The dissertation defense of Johannes Schwerdt took place October 13., 2023. Johannes successfully defended his dissertation on "Information Search Behavior Profiles: Analysis of Search Activities & Behavior Driven Ranking". Afra'a Ahmad Alyosef's dissertation defense was held on Sept. 28, 2023. She successfully defended her dissertation on "Large Scale Partial- and Near-Duplicate Image Retrieval Using Spatial Information of Local Features". The dissertation committee consisted of the chairman Prof. Dr. Benjamin Noack, the reviewers Prof. Dr. Andreas Nürnberger, Prof. Dr. i. R. The 4th IEEE International Conference on Human-Machine Systems (ICHMS) will be held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, May 15-17, 2024, as an in-person event. The theme of the 4^th ICHMS is “Trustworthy Human-Autonomy Teaming”. The conference will specifically cover progress and contributions on brain-inspired autonomous systems at multiple scales, including cognitive science, engineering, and design for safe and trusted human-autonomy teaming; technological aids for verifiable artificial intelligence (AI) decisions; trust modeling, measures, and management, and fundamental issues of trust and barriers to adoption of AI-enabled autonomy in complex socio-technical systems.

We are pleased to announce the publication of the Handbook of Human-Machine Systems. The editors are Giancarlo Fortino, David Kaber, Andreas Nürnberger, and David Mendonça. In the Handbook of Human-Machine Systems, a team of distinguished researchers provides a comprehensive exploration of human-machine systems (HMS) research and development from a variety of illuminating perspectives. The book provides a big-picture view of the state of the art in HMS research and technology. Contributors cover brain-machine interfaces and systems, including assistive technologies such as devices that enhance locomotion. They also discuss advances in the scientific and engineering foundations of Collaborative Intelligent Systems and applications.

On 05.05.2023 the dissertation defense of Philipp Ernst took place. He successfully defended his dissertation on "Prior Knowledge for Deep Learning Based Interventional Cone Beam Computed Tomography Reconstruction". The doctoral committee consisted of the chairman Prof. Dr. Sebastian Stober, the reviewers Prof. Dr. Andreas Nürnberger, Prof. Dr. Georg Rose and Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Placidi as well as the commission member Prof. Dr. Christian Hansen.
